Who is a woman who’s made an impact on your career?

Among others (including especially my mother who sat with me for hours when I was a young child who was struggling to learn to read and write): my 5th grade English teacher, who brought Ivy League training to the classroom, and in particular really supported me (as I tried to study everything from John Locke to Vietnamese history); my 12th grade English teacher, who taught my favorite class in high-school and encouraged me, regardless of the job I ended up taking, to write; my real analysis professor, who taught me how to think about math and prove things rigorously; my thesis advisor, who taught me how to do technical research and communicate it (and also taught me Bayesian statistics!); a medical humanities professor, who taught me how to integrate mindfulness into medical practice; and my medical school advisor, who supported me to find my own, unique path as a physician.

In addition, by the examples they set, all of the above taught me strength, compassion, and integrity, which I try to apply each day in my work.
